Education For
Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Students
Engage-Ed lessons are accessible to DHH students who
sign, speech read, use captions and/or amplification,
or any combination of the above
Our student lessons are created FOR DHH students of all ages, with them specifically in mind
Our educator trainings are created to support teachers in general education and special education, Teachers of the Deaf, and case-managers/support personnel who work with DHH students
Our interpreter trainings, workshops, and programs are focused on creating partnerships between the interpreting community and DHH students, both those in educational interpreting and those who provide access to these students in the broader community
Our page also offers a collection of resources for families with DHH students
Why This Is Needed
DHH students have needs and strengths that are often different than those of their
hearing peers, & teaching them requires an understanding of their uniqueness
Mainstream classroom, a self-contained program, or a Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing school
However, most content used by teachers, staff, & interpreters (whether in a general-education
setting or in Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing settings) are designed for hearing children
Many assessments aren’t normed for DHH students
General education teachers have few resources and little information
Itinerant teachers often have to create ways to keep documentation, check out equipment, share data, & train other staff
Students who make use of ASL interpretation are often given no training on how to best utilize, request, or manage those services
(in school or outside of it)
Educational interpreters often find themselves isolated from the wider interpreter profession, without support or focused training, & struggling while Community interpreters often have no experience with younger Deaf consumers (Smith, 2018)
