Cultural Awareness and Support
Technological Accessibility Equity
This assignment is created to be done online, but can also be accomplished by downloading
the Rough Draft and Brainstorming documents so that typing can be done if there is no internet
access at home. This is a huge concern for many of my more rural students, or those who are living
below the poverty line and have no access to broadband internet
Linguistic Equity
When provided to signing students, there would be an ASL version of the lesson instructions
imbedded below each and every section of the WebQuest (Intro, Task, etc) as well
as under each of the two sections of the Assessment section
Assignments that are sent home to Spanish speaking families include the directions and forms
translated into Spanish like this one here Self Evaluation Form Spanish
I have done translated forms for parents into Russian, as well, but I have to rely 100% on Google Translate for that, which worries me
Assignment Goals
This assignment gives culturally Deaf students a chance to share relevant moments in Deaf history,
how Deaf people’s tendency differ from hearing norms, and to share the language that connects them all
Accessibility and Interpretation
Those students who sign are encouraged to work with the classroom interpreter when practicing
their presentation, to ensure that the interpreter is relaying their message the way that they would prefer
If a classroom is mixed signing/LSL, two interpreters will be necessary
(one to relay information from ASL into English, and the other to move from English into ASL)
This ensures that students using either/both modalities have equal access to the
information being presented, questions being asked, etc
